Traffic Safety Award Presented to Ramapo

The Town of Ramapo Police Department is proud to  announce that it has been awarded the AAA Platinum Award for Community Traffic Safety, the highest honor in the region, recognizing the  Department’s comprehensive and sustained efforts to promote roadway  safety, education, and enforcement throughout the Town.

This distinguished recognition, shared by only a select few municipalities  across the region, highlights the Department’s “boots on the ground”  commitment to protecting motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. The  award acknowledges a wide range of proactive initiatives including crosswalk  enforcement details, educational outreach programs, impaired and drunk  driving awareness campaigns, participation in the No Empty Chair initiative,  school bus safety operations, and the innovative Town of Ramapo Reflective  Sash Program.

Ramapo Police officers serve as Child Passenger Safety Technicians and  Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers, working closely with the NYS Police and State Department of Transportation to ensure compliance, education, and roadway safety for all. The Department’s dedicated Traffic Safety Enforcement Unit, in combination with the daily  efforts of its patrol division, consistently maintains among the highest vehicle and traffic enforcement and impaired driving arrest levels in  Rockland County.

Ramapo has also taken major steps forward in technology and data-driven safety improvements. Adaptive traffic lights are now being utilized throughout the Town, and the Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit employs advanced tools and techniques to determine causes of collisions,  providing valuable insights for potential infrastructure enhancements.

The Department’s Drone as a First Responder (DFR) program, the first and  only FAA-approved initiative of its kind in Rockland County, further demonstrates Ramapo’s leadership in public safety innovation. This cutting edge program enhances operational efficiency and enables the Department  to gather critical real-time data during emergencies and crash investigations, ultimately helping to make Ramapo’s roadways safer.

Additionally, the Town’s Taxi Registration Program through the Office of  Emergency Preparedness and Safety, promotes accountability and passenger  safety through strict compliance inspections and licensing oversight.

“These are only a few of the initiatives brought forward by Supervisor Michael Specht, the Ramapo Town Board, the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Safety, and the Police Department as we work together  to serve Rockland County’s most populated municipality,” said Chief of Police Dan Hyman. Supervisor Specht added, “The Town of Ramapo is honored by this recognition and remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and community partnership.”

The Ramapo PD extends its sincere appreciation to AAA for  this Platinum Award distinction and congratulates our own Traffic Safety  Officer for receiving the prestigious AAA “HERO” Award for outstanding  individual contributions to traffic safety.

Finally, the Department expresses its gratitude to the Ramapo community for their continued partnership and support in advancing these vital safety  initiatives.
