Haverstraw Named a Purple Heart Town

12At the Town of Haverstraw Board Meeting last week, several members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Charles G. Muller Chapter 120 of Rockland County presented supervisor and town board with a plaque and flag proclaiming the Town of Haverstraw a Purple Heart Town. Supervisor Howard Phillips and the Town Board also presented a proclamation to Commander Howard Goldin and the members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart recognizing the town’s wish to become a Purple Heart Town.

The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in present use. It was initially created by General George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit. It was awarded to any member of the United States Armed Services wounded or killed in combat with a declared enemy of the United States. Supervisor Howard Phillips said, “The Town of Haverstraw is the first town in Rockland County to be named a Purple Heart Town and is very proud to accept this honor.”
