A statement from Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R,C,I-Deerpark)
“While Gov. Cuomo touted his accomplishments on Common Core, Assembly Republicans have been calling for an end to Common Core for years. Our schools are still struggling to adapt to the new curriculum, and anything less than a complete overhaul of the standards would be insulting to our parents, teachers and students.
“The governor has failed us on education by refusing to eliminate the GEA this year. The unfair education cuts supported by New York City Democrats in 2010 force our schools to lay off teachers and cut programs. Even more disgraceful is the governor and Assembly Democrats’ plan to give free college education to convicts.
“In terms of ethics reform, the governor has sheepishly refused to lead the way on pension forfeiture for corrupt lawmakers and would rather leave the issue to Assembly Democrats who voted against the measure last year. Furthermore, he failed to address term limits for legislative leaders, something that would prevent the accumulation of power that led to the abuses of Sheldon Silver and Dean Skelos.”
